Envirolution is the creation of several college classmates who simply wanted to make a positive impact on the world. Each one felt blessed by the opportunities they have had in their lives, and they wanted to put their energy, skills, and education into a humanitarian effort. The idea was to leverage the influence and power of the business world in a philanthropic direction.
In 2006 the vision was to run a real estate company that built schools in Latin American countries. Interest in real estate led them to the world of green building. Excited to learn about this growing industry, they took steps to build their own green company in the Lake Tahoe region. Through this process they adopted the perspective of the triple bottom line (or the Three Spheres as we now call it): building in an environmentally responsible manner, tying in a social non-profit arm, and making the real estate company financially successful. This concept would eventually guide them through the rest of their efforts.
The co-founders were not environmental activists prior to founding Envirolution. It was during the development of the real estate company that they began to seriously understand the crises facing our planet. As they learned more about the dangerous status of the environment, they also saw that many of the possible solutions were out there and that there were immense opportunities to advance positive, sustainable change, if only the right players could be brought to the table. They became passionate about understanding the problems and about finding innovative solutions.
Upon researching and learning more about this sweeping green movement, some of the gaps became apparent. First, there are lots of amazing organizations and individuals working towards a sustainable future, but there is a need for more collaborative action to increase efficiency and impact. Second the green movement is still not part of the mainstream. There is a lot of talk, but a lack of action. Third, young people are not being targeted as leaders of this movement, which will disproportionately affect their lives. Sustainability needs to be brought to them in their terms so they appreciated its relevance and were excited about the solutions. Fourth, many people care and want to contribute, but don’t know how, and fifth, there are a ton of resources on the web, but they are all over the place. There is a need for a central hub to learn about issues and solutions, connect to others who care, and find out ways to take action. The founders of Envirolution assessed all of these problems and came up with the idea to create collaborative platforms, thereby filling the gaps for information, unity, and action.
In the summer of 2006, the three co-founders set out on a path to create an organization that could boost the movement and bring a more diverse group of players into the fold. For the last two years, the co-founders have worked diligently in the East Village neighborhood in New York City to create the foundation for this organization. They have had help from many friends along the way, and they invite all who are interested to join them, as they inspire an entire culture and a movement toward sustainable prosperity.
